Despite the recent surge of optimism about Australia's economic recovery, a report on the health of listed companies is not so encouraging.

More than 70 per cent of 200 companies outside the financial services sector went backwards, according to the Australian Corporate Health Index.

Many of our clients know us as a marketing consultancy and indeed that is how we started our business.

 

Over the years though, we have developed a keen sense that traditional marketing is more of a hindrance than a help to most organisations.

 

Many clients came to us for marketing help but we found it wasn’t marketing they needed, it was organisational development.

 

Going from an organisation with a $1million budget to a $10million budget takes more than just a clever marketing campaign; it takes a certain attitude and a certain way of thinking.

 

For example, when an organisation reaches a certain level of development it is easy to fall into the trap of defending what it has rather than looking toward continual improvement and development. Managers may not want to implement programs that they think threaten their positions even though they may be great for the organisation and ‘leaders’ of an organisation may know how to manage the status quo but not necessarily lead an organisation to the next level of development.

 

So most organisations are quite happy to accept superficial quick fixes (these don’t actually exist by the way) like traditional marketing and branding campaigns rather than work for a real fix because it means…well, it means…work! Which also means changing the way the organisation currently operates!

 

Developing new thinking is more fundamental to organisational success than the marketing message coming from it. In other words; a successful organisation needs to;

Question its status quo

Be clear about what it stand for,

Be led by passionate, competent, fearless leaders who are prepared to recognise they don’t have all the answers

Walk its talk

Have a team that works together and not for themselves,

Knows how to take educated risks and reward learning rather than punishing mistakes

Turn difficult situations into their own advantage

Understand what has made it successful

 

An advertising campaign can’t do any of this for you.
